Haiti, January 2010.  The "catastrophic" earthquake, devoured shipping, crumbled fragile infrastructure, scattered much of Haiti's population, and in the end produced a "quiet memorial" so vast that more than 100,000 people lay entombed in mass graves just outside of Port Au Prince.
